Held every November in the heart of Shillong, this young festival (just 5 years old!) turns the Scotland of the East into a fairytale. If Japan’s sakura is on your bucket list but Tokyo feels too far, the Shillong cherry blossom festival brings the magic closer – and cheaper!

Why Visit the Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival?

Ward’s Lake Shillong cherry blossoms

Simple: It’s nature’s pop-up art gallery. Over 5,000 cherry trees – planted by the Forest Department and Japan’s IBC – burst into bloom mid-November, painting Ward’s Lake, RB Road, and nearby villages in blush pink. But this Cherry blossom festival isn’t just pretty – it’s a celebration of Indo-Japanese friendship, Khasi culture, and Meghalaya’s clean, cool air (15–20°C, perfect hoodie weather).

Plus, it’s less crowded than Japan’s hanami, more budget-friendly, and packed with local soul – think bamboo stalls, tribal dances, and momos under cherry canopies.
