The Hornbill Festival started in the year 2000. It was conceptualized by the Government of Nagaland to promote and preserve the state’s rich cultural heritage.

Fly into Dimapur Airport (DMU) – the closest gateway (70 km from Kohima).
IndiGo, Air India operate daily flights from Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati.
From airport: Prepaid taxis (₹1500–2000) or shared cabs to Kohima (3 hrs).
By Train
Dimapur Railway Station connects to major cities:

1. Main Arena Cultural Performances (10 AM – 4 PM daily)
The grand opening ceremony on 1st December and the closing on 10th evening are absolute fireworks – arrive early for front-row bamboo seats.

2. Tribal Morungs (Huts) Experience

Each tribe has its own traditional morung at Kisama. Step inside to see young warriors in full regalia, taste rice beer poured from bamboo mugs, and listen to elders narrate oral histories and legends. Best time: 3–5 PM when crowds thin out and storytelling gets personal.
